A cyclist has been left with a critical head injury after a collision with a pedestrian.

At 2.25pm on Saturday (31 May) the 54-year old local woman was cycling in Madeira Drive when she collided with a 33-year old woman pedestrian from Hertfordshire and sustained a serious head injury.

The cyclist was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and later transferred to Hurstwood Park Hospital where she is currently in a critical condition.

It is understood the cyclist was riding in the cycle lane.

The pedestrian received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact Sussex Police via 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Omega.

wow " It is understood the cyclist was riding in the cycle lane. I hope they are ok.
Unfortunately pedestrians will walk into a cycle lane without looking, this is not confined to cycle lanes but also happens when pedestrians step off the kerb into the road. Even if you cycle carefully if this happens suddenly right in front of you there is not much you can do, profuse use of the bell can help here.
Still I would much rather collide with a pedestrian than a car.

Never was a fan of this cycle route as it puts you in conflict with pedestrians. It should have been properly laid out with single direction cycle path on either side of the road.

How sad. I hope the cyclist recovers. I was cycling there on Saturday afternoon too and it was busy with people out enjoying the sunshine. This accident shouldn't be a reason to ban cyclists - why shouldn't we enjoy the expansive seafront as well as pedestrians, skaters etc.? That's what makes it so appealing to lots of people. (I can almost here some diehard killjoys spluttering over their tea here...).
There are ways to make Madeira Drive and the rest of the prom safer though. Giving pedestrians priority, maybe using a noisier surface on the cycle path so people are more aware of bikes and keeping the cycle lane on the sea-side of the road between Concord 2 and the marina. That crossover is really dangerous in my view.
Once again, I wish the injured cyclist a speedy recovery.

Problem is: most of these cycle lanes are shared with pedestrians - not sure if this applies here but I think it does - if so Pedestrians should always have priority. But what is a cyclist doing not wearing a hard hat? Very strange.

It sounds like a tourist who wouldn't think that any council would be crazy enough to put a cycle lane on a busy seafront pavement. The worst part is the cycle lane passing on the edge of the pavement at the pedestrian crossings and pedestrians walk straight into the path of cyclists without any warning. The accident has been waiting to happen.

So you'd rather the innocent cyclist be the one who is injured.

How about moronic pedestrians actually STOP walking on cycle paths?

What part of a different coloured path, with bike emblems painted on on, and cyclists riding chimming their bells every ten seconds on is STILL confusing for you?

It's never your fault though is it you total moron!!!!

I know,! they should have insurance as well. Not sure if that would work.

Why are you so angry? Why do you hate pedestrians? A simple ACCIDENT where two people ended up injured, and all you can do is RANT about pedestrians. So helpful.

In response to your 3 sentences :
1. Wrong - refer to the law that says that
2. Do you ? You can't get very far if you do
3. Do you know every cyclist and their intentions ?
