From the photo that accompanied the story in The Argus (June 7) Mother uses social media to highlight ‘danger walk’ it is clear this stretch of road would be dangerous to walk through for a single adult – and even more so for an adult accompanied by three young children.

The railway came to Pulborough in 1859, so presumably the bridge and nearby houses date from around the same time.

Now the traffic has increased substantially, a fresh look needs to be taken at the area.

A simple and cheap job which could at least reduce the hazard is to cut back the vegetation on the left hand side of the bridge.

The growth seems to come from railway land so this should be attended to now.

One long term solution would be to provide a footpath under the bridge, but that would then cause problems for vehicles as the road would probably need to be restricted to one lane.

The council’s suggestion of a pedestrian underpass would not only be costly, but would also be disruptive to all in the area at least in the short term.

In addition, it would not be a solution which could be implemented very quickly.

Perhaps a simpler solution might be to use existing access routes.

Looking at the area on Google Earth shows there is vehicular access along a private road just before the bridge on Stopham Road and this runs behind the platform at Pulborough.

An access point might be needed to get on to the platform if this is not already in place for the use of railway staff.

The station building is on the other side of the tracks and there is a subway joining the two.

The pedestrian could then get back on to Station Road and continue the journey in relative safety.

I hope that decisive action is taken by the council and/or the railway landowner before there are any further injuries.
