The blessing of the boats

First published in News

FISHERMEN’S boats were blessed in a traditional ceremony.

The annual Blessing of the Boats was held at Beach Green, Lancing, at 2.30pm on Sunday when the boats were sprinkled with blessed Holy Water.

The ceremony goes back to Biblical days when many of the first followers of Jesus were fishermen by trade.

Father Barry Carter said: “Blessing the boats is now firmly established as one of Lancing’s traditions.

“It is valued by the sailing community and popular with residents and visitors.”

Originally an event celebrating the historic fishing community in the town, the service now recognises the pleasure boating community as well.

The service was conducted by Father Carter and he was accompanied by hymns from the Sir Robert Woodard Academy Band.

What happened to the Blessing Of The Boats we used to do in Brighton, or even the Burning Of The Boats Festival we had commemorating defeating the French in the late 1500s, 1576 i think, when the malitia from Steyning burnt their boats before they could leave, most of them survived, and settled in Brighton.

Hi brightonline,
This isn't a random picture, it's my boat. I brought it to the ceremony from neighbouring Lancing Sailing Club on Sunday afternoon.

There aren't any fishermen's boats in Lancing any longer, that's why the ceremony focuses on other local sea users like kitesurfers, SUP and of course dinghy sailors.
The link on Vimeo doesn't seem to be working, what is it?
