Overturned lorry on the A27 between Falmer and Hollingbury caused both lanes to close

The Argus: Overturned lorry on the A27 Overturned lorry on the A27

An overturned beer lorry on the A27 eastbound caused major delays for motorists.

Both lanes between Hollingbury and Falmer were initally closed by emergency services, who arrived at the scene around 11:30am.

Crews from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service managed to shift the lorry so that lane two could be opened.

The lorry's load was removed and a recovery truck was brought in to clear the obstruction.

Traffic was diverted around the scene to Coldean Lane but some drivers reversed to travel the wrong way up a nearby slip road, which was not sanctioned by police.

Inspector Phil Nicholas, of Sussex Police's road policing unit, said: "Full closure of the eastbound carriageway lasted some 45 minutes at most.

"Just as we advise drivers to take warm clothing and hot drinks with them during the winter, it is sensible to ensure you have water and the means to keep cool when the weather is hot.

"We regret delays caused by this incident, but thank motorists who showed patience while everything was being done to get traffic flowing again."

The cause of the incident is being investigated and anyone who saw what happened should call Sussex Police on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk, quoting serial 543 of 18/7.

I take it you mean the turn off to Hollingbury and down Coldean Lane. Why would you drive through Hollingbury to get back onto the A27?

It looks like they have changed the story not just updated it as the reporter said traffic was being diverted through Hollingbury as I commented on when the article first appeared.

For once Hjarrs has posted a sensible comment. I too hope the driver was all right; and all joking apart beer is a sustainable product that can be brewed again.
But these days it seems to be the most minor of accidents that give cause to close roads. Why did the Police not block the previous slip road and allow trapped traffic to carefully turn and exit in the wrong direction- and divert past the scene?
I (unknowingly at the time) drove past the scene of an accident up a side road once. I witnessed no fewer than five blue-lighted police vehicles racing to the scene in a matter of minutes, to what was a single vehicle accident. There is no shortage of Police when they choose.

I'm surprised that police are criticised for hurrying to the scene of an accident, whether it is one vehicle or multi vehicles involved. Surely it's better if as many available to help turn up..as quickly as possible and then those not required can leave the scene. One vehicle does not necessarily mean minor, sadly, people die in one vehicle accidents.
