A school  has been declared Champion of Champions at Goodwood.

St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Clymping, near Littlehampton, was crowned the winner of the Greenpower Gathering of Goblins at Goodwood Motor Circuit.

The school’s team, McLymping, finished first overall out of 86 schools at the gathering, with both the school’s cars finishing in first and second in the timed lap.

Chris Dearnley, a parent and one of the organisers of Team McLymping, said: “The team have been great ambassadors for, and a credit to, the school, demonstrating their skills, knowledge, teamwork and support for other teams.”

Pupils Landon Jones and Ben Sizmur drove the cars, Typhoon and Tornado, into first and second place.

Although all members of Team McLymping deserve credit for their winning performance, Ben’s achievement stands out after he went from 80th on the grid to finish second in the timed lap.

Team McLymping are now the most successful team in the history of Goblin racing in the UK, after amassing an amazing 25 trophies.

The Greenpower Gathering of Goblins is run by The Greenpower Education Trust, which aims to inspire young people to become engineers by presenting the industry as an interesting career choice.

Greenpower races offer teams of students between the ages of nine and 25 the chance to build and race their own electric-powered race cars around top national racing circuits such as Goodwood.

The National Gathering of Goblins is the largest event of the Greenpower Goblin racing calendar with more than 90 cars taking part.

The Goblin cars are built by the children from a kit, powered by two 12 volt car batteries.

Mr Dearnley said: “Although three of the parent organisers are standing aside this year, the team is in a great place going forward.

“With a new refreshed group of parents and enthusiasts to help the team, they can achieve great things next year and in years to come.”
