Boy, 3, takes family car for a spin and crashes

First published in News

A three-year-old boy took his family's car for a ride - and drove down two embankments in West Sussex before ending up in a pub garden with just a bumped head.

The boy started up the engine to the automatic Subaru Impreza and drove off down the family's long driveway in Henley, near Midhurst.

He then carried on, driving down two embankments before ending up in the garden of the nearby 16th Century Duke of Cumberland Arms pub.

Police who were called to the incident said that the unnamed youngster escaped with just a slight bump to his head.

It is believed he was not close to venturing on to any main roads and managed to avoid hitting any members of the public.

A woman at the pub - crowned Pub of the Year in the 2012 Good Food Guide's Editors' Choice Awards - declined to comment about the boy's escapade, saying the owners were away.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The boy unlocked the Subaru Impreza vehicle, which is an automatic, started it and drove it down the driveway, down two embankments and ended up in the garden of the Duke of Cumberland Arms pub.

"He suffered a slight bump to the head after hitting it on the steering wheel. An ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital to be checked out.

"No one else was hurt, although the car was damaged."

Like medicines, knives, etc: keys should be kept well out of reach of three-year olds. And car keys especially should be kept hidden anyway; not left on the hall table or bedside cabinet for any housebreaker to find.
