Change to electoral system

First published in News

WEALDEN District Council is making the biggest change to its electoral system in 100 years.

The electoral registration officer is writing to the district’s 120,000 constituents to explain about the new system of individual electoral registration.

Samantha Mills, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission, said: “We welcome this change, which will lead to a more secure register and replace the outdated Victorian concept that a single head of household is responsible for registering everyone.”

From the end of July, Wealden residents will receive a letter telling them if they have been transferred to the new register or not.

People who have not been transferred need to provide additional information which will be explained in the letter.

For more information, visit www.gov.uk/yourvotematters.

If you have not received a letter by the end of August, contact Wealden’s elections team at elections@wealden.gov.uk or call 01892 602417.

Man of steel says...

This is not just Wealden, it is general, everybody has to register themselves, a way of getting more people and facts in the annual census.
Also it is a way of getting you back onto the open register, so that your details can be seen by, or sold to, anybody that is interested, it only takes about 30 seconds on the phone to get back off though.

Looks like the weekend work-experience staff back on duty again.

This article is worryingly misleading. The change is happening everywhere - not just Wealden.

More worrying however is what it tells us about level of public awareness of the people who write and edit this stuff.
