WHEN it was announced the Tour of Britain was to visit Sussex there was one rider everyone wanted to see at the start line: Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The news that the Team Sky rider will defend his title this year is therefore a huge boost. Not only will it be fantastic for the thousands who line the route, but traders will cash in on the Wiggo effect.

The 34-year-old is perhaps the best loved bike rider in the UK having won the Tour de France in 2012 as well as multiple Olympic gold medals.

He will no doubt attract thousands including many youngsters. Research shows that each year thousands more youngsters take to their bikes after watching the tour. The inclusion of Sir Bradley this year can only boost that.

The economic benefits of the race are also huge. Last year it was estimated £3million was pumped into the local economy for each stage of the race.

Given the popularity of the sport and the success of the Tour de France in Yorkshire this year, this figure could grow even more. Roll on September 13.
