FUN, frolics, laughter, memories and most importantly, community spirit.

Sussex boasts an abundance of brilliant all-year-round community events from Paddle Round The Pier in Brighton to Worthing’s popular Rotary Carnival Procession – and we want to hear about the ones deserving of an award.

On November 1, the Community Star Awards will crown one event with its Community Event of the Year prize at a glamorous ceremony at the Theatre Royal in Brighton.

But we want you to let us know who is deserving of the prize. Did you or your family have an unforgettable time at a recent event? Or do you know of event organisers who have gone out of their way to raise hundreds, if not thousands, for charity? A good example of a deserving nomination is the annual Fulking Village Fair.

The village, near Devil’s Dyke, has a population of just 250 people. But it is renowned for holding one of the best fairs to ever grace the county’s glorious countryside.

This year the “biggest and best” Fulking Fair saw 2,000 people flock to the picturesque village for a BBQ, drinks, music, games, rides, tea, cake and more – with all the money raised ploughed back into village projects.

Popular violinist and musician Nigel Kennedy, who lives in the village, is always happy to wow the crowds with his performances and the fair raises several thousand pounds a year to fund projects like the Pigeon Post, Fulking’s newsletter, and the continued use of the Village Hall.

Most recently, a new play area was built for the children in the North Town Field.

Fundraising efforts from the Fulking Social Committee saw more than £3,000 go towards the project, with a further £3,000 matched by a local firm.

Treasurer of Fulking Social Committee Bob Rowland said: “If it would’ve been a day later it could’ve been a disaster.

“The music was better than it’s ever been and it was just an absolutely tremendous day. I honestly believe there is no fair in Sussex better than ours now.

“The villagers and ex-villagers all pull together and create a wonderful sense of community.”
