An unprovoked attack left a 50-year-old man with a fractured eye socket.

The victim was walking in St James's Street, Brighton, at about 2am last Friday, August 8, when he was approached by a man who asked him for a cigarette.

Without warning, the attacker then punched the victim and ran off along St James's Street.

The attacker was white, about 30 years old and 5ft 6in with scruffy brown hair.

The victim did not report the incident to police until two days later.

Detective Constable Melanie Wauchope said: "This was a nasty attack in an area of the city that could have had quite a few people in it at that time on Friday night.

"We need to speak to anyone who saw the attack or the man running away.

"Any information at all that you have could be useful so please contact us."

Anyone with information should email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 561 of 11/08, call 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Vicious, vile and wrong. Why would you attack someone for no reason at all?
Typical of the yobbo mentality pervading society today.

No-one has said that there wasn't provocation, but I do accept that there are too many scummy people around.

Please can we all stop liking/disliking Stevo's posts or replying to his posts. Trolls like him thrive on attention (even if negative) and need to be recognised on forums such as this. I have recently been studying the psychology of internet trolls and completely ignoring their posts is the only way to stop them dead in their tracks. It's up to you but if you want an end to these troll posts then this is the only way.

There seems to have been quite a few bashings and slashings in the town centre recently. Trafalgar Street, North Street and St James's Street form a triangle of crime with some similarities between the incidents. I wonder whether it's some gang / minority element responsible for most / some if it?
We don't know that the victim was looking for gay sex and even if he was, he didn't deserve to sustain such injuries.
