A man who was caught urinating on a war memorial in Brighton is to clean the area to say sorry.

The 49-year-old man was stopped on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly after he was seen relieving himself onto the grounds of the memorial in Old Steine shortly after 11pm on Friday 23 July.

Officers spoke to the man, from Portslade, and he agreed to spend two hours cleaning the gardens with staff from CityClean as community resolution for what he had done.

PC Jimmy Conway said: "The memorial is a very important site for people in the city and when people urinate there it causes a great deal of anger and upset.

"In this case the man was very apologetic when he was challenged and agreed that what he had done was thoughtless and offensive.

"We take all incidents of urinating in public seriously and deal with any offenders we catch. Anyone we catch committing the offence may be offered community resolution or given a fine of £90."

There was urinating during Brighton Pride and far as I know the Police took no action. One man was reported as urinating on a church wall and the Police officer just told him it was disrespectful and to go somewhere else.

Not severe enough. The punishment needs to reflect the deed.
**** on the epitaph for fallen heroes should be punishable by Flogging, The Stocks, Stoning or at least a modicum of severity.

This will not deter anybody from committing a similar offence. Law and Order its a joke.

Ah, but we mustn't upset the little darlings by enforcing the law during Pride events.

You try finding public toilet that's open. We should have pissoirs like France.

How about some portable toilets in the area which the pubs and clubs should pay for as they encourage people into the area.
This sort of thing happens most nights when the out of town busses pull up by the memorial. The teenagers on them drink all the way to Brighton and as soon as they get off the bus they relieve themselfs on there or behind the trees.

How about ( and I admit this sounds radical) people use the toilets inside the clubs before they leave?

Why should clubs pay for outside toilets that might be used by people who never go clubbing?

Two years ago I was walking home from town on the Saturday of Gay Pride and saw 2 men engaging in a sex act on the lawns between the Pavilion and St. Peter's one of the men was virtually naked and as there were police walking around that area no doubt they saw this but nothing happened, as you state, anyone who criticises anything to do with Gay Pride is immediately termed homophobic.

Does this apply to those who do it, and defalcating, with seeming impunity in Stanmer Park, Wild Park, 39 Acres, 19 Acres, Waterhall Playing Fields, Black Rock, East Brighton Park, Preston Park, Carden Park, Hollingbury Park, Withdean Park, Patcham Place & all our other parks & open green spaces?
Could it be that this legislation only applies to local taxpaying residents but not local non-paying residents & visiting unlawful campers?

The posts on here horrify me. Yes this man has done wrong and should be punished but hey I'm a homophobe here is my chance to criticise gay pride and suggest that everyone who attended Preston Park urinated everywhere before having sex in any available shop door or bush. Get out of your chair and visit West Street and see what straight people do on a Friday evening. You will either be equally as disgusted or as jealous as hell that your life consists of simply passing judgements on others. As a final thought have any of the above contributors never been caught short? We are supposed to live in a diverse town (city) but there are some narrow minded sad cases that share it with us.
