Who makes your business tick? Or who makes work life that much more pleasurable – simply by being themselves?

Sussex is full of hard-working employees and high-achieving colleagues who are calling out to be recognised.

That’s why The Argus Community Stars Awards is on the lookout for nominations for an Employee of the Year to be crowned at the Theatre Royal Brighton on November 1. To give you an idea, nominations could include people such as science teacher Qasim Haque.

The Hove Park teacher consistently goes the extra mile and is often found staying up until 1am to build comprehensive GCSE revision packs for his class.

One student said of his teacher: “Mr Haque made six revision guides – all around 200 pages each – for the various science topics that will be studied over the two years of GCSEs. Each book contains videos narrated by himself fully explaining how to work various things out.

“He is the best teacher because he really motivates us to do well, even if science is one of our most disliked subjects. He makes his lessons more fun, which maintains every student’s concentration but also makes sure everyone understands everything they need to.”

But nominations for Employee of the Year don’t just have to work in education. They could also come from the world of business.

Katrina Roberts, vice-president of Global Network and International Consumer Technologies Europe at American Express, was this year recognised for her driven, persistent and passionate leadership. As manager of a team of 150, she is responsible for delivering technology solutions across all European markets and is a mentor to high-potential female talent within American Express, helping to increase female representation within the business to 30%.

Other potential nominees could include Diana Cracknell – a Brighton healthcare assistant who always goes the extra mile for her patients.

Colleague Janice Gilmartin said: “Diana uses her own money to buy things that will make people feel good, such as shampoos, moisturisers, manicure sets and rollers. She then showers them, gives them manicures and makes them look nice. Diana says it’s because she wants to treat her patients as well as she would have wanted her mother to be treated.”

Diana is the healthcare assistant who never loses patience and her unique approach has been recognised as having a significant influence on people’s lives.
