A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder his neighbour.

A 34-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed at a flat in Sackville Road, Hove and Sussex Police said a neighbour had been arrested.

Residents saw emergency services arrive at a property close to the junction with Blatchington Road.

They told of their shock and a police sergeant later praised his officers for the way they dealt with the drama.

Sam Set, who works at Joeies Convenience Store on Blatchington Road, said customers saw the victim being taken away looking badly injured.

He said: “I saw a police car and a police van outside.

“Then there were quite a few police cars and there was an ambulance outside here.

“I started at 7pm so it was about 7.30pm.

“A customer came in and said: Do you know what's happened?

“The police car stayed there until at least 2.30am.

“It was still there when I left.”

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “You do not expect this kind of thing to happen where you live.

“I hope the woman survives and gets better.”

Another said: “We did hear quite a lot of sirens.

“It's shocking to have these things happen so close to home.”

One woman added: “This is appalling.

“I'm just glad it was not worse.”

Sergeant Ned Edwards praised the actions of his officers in responding to the attack at 7.20pm on Monday.

He said on Twitter: “Last night my team displayed bravery, control, compassion and knowledge in unbelievable circumstances. #proud.”
