With reference to the letter “Alternatives to pot”, (Argus Letters, September 25).

I have been chairman of two multiple sclerosis therapy centres and have met a few people who have used cannabis with different degrees of benefit. The writer of the letter refers to alternative forms of treatment to the use of cannabis, such as attention to lifestyle and diet, but would seem to be unaware of HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygenation Treatment) which many thousands of people with MS have used during the past 30 years.

In trials conducted by Emeritus Professor Philip James and the late Dr David Perrins, the long-term regular use of HBOT has been shown to slow symptoms.

HBOT is the use of breathing oxygen under pressure in a chamber as a treatment.

I am 74 and have had MS for 30 years and have used HBOT weekly with benefit at the Sussex MS Treatment Centre in Southwick.

I am one of 80 people who attend the centre for HBOT every week. I can confirm that it is safe, without side-effects and inexpensive.

In 2008, the Health Care Commission, now the Care Quality Commission, deregulated MS therapy Centres on the grounds of their safety in treating people. This was the first time for a medical treatment to be deregulated. Christopher Fox-Walker Merlswood, Meads Road, Eastbourne
