Three men were arrested after they abandoned their vehicle during a police chase.

A member of the public rang police to say she had seen the men acting suspiciously in The Birches, Crawley, at 1.20pm on Wednesday.

They then got into a vehicle and made off. They failed to stop for police and headed towards Peglar Way. The men then abandoned the car in Church Street, before climbing over a fence and running off.

The police helicopter was scrambled and spotted one of them hiding in bushes. He was arrested and the other two were also detained nearby.

A 17-year-old boy of no fixed address, a 22-year-old man from Redhill, Surrey and a 34-year-old man from Cranleigh, Surrey, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently in custody.

Detective Inspector Dave Wardley-Wilkins said: "We are appealing for witnesses for anyone who saw a dark coloured Audi A3 car in Horsham and in Crawley on Wednesday (1 October).

"These arrests could not have happened without an alert member of the public reporting that these men were acting suspiciously.

"This information enabled our operations team, road policing unit, the police helicopter, neighbourhood response team and CID to work together to bring about the arrests."

Anyone with information about the incident or who saw the car in Crawley or Horsham is asked to contact police on 101 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Monza.
