Firefighters have responded to seven emergency calls due to weather related problems as Sussex endured a rain-drenched start to the day.

Worthing, Lancing, Brighton and beyond were hit by storms in the early hours and heavy downpours continue to fall across the coast.

Two  vehicles rolled off the A27 this morning in seperate incidents because of the heavy rain and were wrecked.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to six incidents of flooding at addresses in Brighton, Hove and Lewes.

Between the hours of 8.23am and 8.36am residents contacted the emergency services in relation to properties being flooded.

Crews attended an incident in Preston Village Mews where a storm drain became blocked and flooded all of all the surrounding houses.

Firefighters unblocked the drain and this resolved the main issue.

Firefighters from Hove, Brighton and Roedean Community Fire Stations all attended flooding calls during this time.

In Worthing, firefighters were called to a shop building in South Street where rainwater had entered the building. They pumped water from the first floor of the building.

At about 7.15am a Peugeot 207 struck the barriers and rolled off the A27 westbound at Binstead, ending up in trees. The driver - a 20-year-old woman from Chichester - escaped with cuts and bruises.

Shortly before 9am a white Porsche Boxster slid off the A27 eastbound at Hammerpot, crashed through a fence and ended up in a field.

The driver escaped with cuts and bruises.

Inspector Stewart Goodwin said: "There have been a number of shunts this morning because of drivers not taking care in the conditions and the two crashes on the A27 could have been far worse.

"In both cases the drivers have been lucky not to have been more seriously injured as they each lost control of their vehicles.

"Please take care in the bad weather. Leaves falling off the trees are making the road surface slippy and the heavy rain has caused flooding on many roads that is causing vehicles to aquaplane on them.

"Be aware of standing water, especially on roads with faster speed limits. Slow down and make sure you get to your destination in one piece."

Weather forecasts predict the heavy showers will move in from the southwest through the day, some prolonged with a risk of thunder.
