A weather warning for rain has been issued for Sussex as downpours caused flooding across the area.

Heavy showers began shortly before 6pm and were persistent causing flash flooding across Brighton and Hove.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue service received 11 emergency calls between 6pm and 7pm, with six logged as flooding related.

The weather warning is in place until 4am on Saturday.

The Met office said this evening's showers would be thundery at times.

A spokesman added:"The public should be aware of the risk of some localised surface water flooding. Lightning and hail may be additional hazards."

The Met Office's chief forecaster said: "Narrow bands of heavy, thundery showers are affecting parts of southeast England, especially Kent and Sussex, where they are likely to line up into bands and produce locally around 30 mm rainfall within a few hours."
