Armed police swooped on Burgess Hill in the early hours of the morning.

It is believed officers were searching for a man who had earlier brandished a gun during an argument at a pub.

Sussex Police has confirmed there was an “incident” but has refused to reveal any more details.

It is understood there was an argument between two men before one pulled out a gun.

Piers O'Sullivan, landlord of The Brewers Arms, in London Road, spoke to local news website Burgess Hill Uncovered.

He said: “A random person came in the pub all agitated and got in a minor argument with some customers, whilst outside of the pub (most likely having a cigarette) he revealed he had a firearm, then left quickly afterwards, thankfully no one was hurt and the police responded very quickly.”

Eyewitnesses reported armed officers making their way up the High Street before searching the nearby station and railway line.

One resident said he was told by police to leave the area as they were searching for a dangerous man.

Marked and unmarked police cars with spotlights were seen searching the roads.

Sussex Police has refused to reveal if any arrests were made.
