A SEVERE weather warning has been issued as Sussex prepares for heavy rain and risk of floods.

Residents have been warned to prepare for 20 to 40 millimetres of rain as the full attack of a wet autumn approaches.

A spokesperson for the Met Office has urged the public to be aware of flooding risks particularly in areas where leaves have fallen from trees and blocked drains.

Drivers have also been urged to be careful as the roads will be more slippery due to light rain and cold mornings last weekend keeping the ground wet.

The heavy rain is expected across the county, with pulses of heavy rain expected from 6pm tomorrow until 9pm on Friday.

The Met Office's Chief Forecaster said: "A developing frontal system is expected to push north, then east across many parts of the UK during Thursday and into Friday. "Rain is expected to become persistent and heavy at times, particularly over south-facing hills.

"Many places may well see 20-30 mm during the period.

"With this bout of heavy rain coming after a few wet days, localised flooding is a possibility either from surface water or from some rivers."
