A HELPINE for customers experiencing power cuts has been launched today.

UK Power Networks, which runs the electricity network across the South East, hopes the phone number will help customers with any concerns about their power supply as winter sets in.

The dedicated phone number is free from a landline and costs a local call rate from a mobile.

In the wake of last year’s storms, the company said it has invested more than £500 million in maintenance and upgrades to make sure its electricity network is reliable this year.

This includes work such as tree cutting, which took place in Sedlescombe yesterday. It said the number of power cuts has reduced by 30% in the last four years and the duration of them by 40%.

Colin Barden, UK Power Networks’ head of network operations in the South East, said: “Communication with customers is a top priority, and we want to ensure everyone in the South East knows who can help them get the lights on quickly. The new number will help people get in touch as soon as the power goes out.”

“We want to be prepared for all weather situations. In addition to our new number, we have added an extra 900 trained call handlers to help improve our customer response during periods of adverse weather.”

The company is also working with the British Red Cross to urge people to join its Priority Services Register so vulnerable people can get the assistance they need in a power cut. More than 137,000 people have registered in the region and are entitled to extra help like home visits.

Call the helpline on 0800 316 3105 from a landline or 0333 323 2105 from a mobile or online at: www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priority.
