Two men face deportation after being jailed for shooting night fishermen.

Modestas Kubilius, 24, and Gintas Piscelinas, 26, fired air pistols at two men they had got into an argument with at Tilgate Lake, Crawley.

The pair were at the lake in the early hours of May 11 when they approached the men.

The victims had a fire going and Kubilius and Piscelinas, both originally from Lithuania, confronted them about it.

One of the men went to call the police while the two Lithuanians went through their tent before finding the pistol.

Kubilius shot one of the victims at point blank range. The victim put his hand up – preventing him being hit in the eye.

Piscelinas also took the weapon and fired at the other man.

The victims had minor injuries.

Kubilius, 24, a builder from Walesbeech, Crawley, was jailed for four years for possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear of violence and eight and five months for each of the ABH offences to run concurrently.

Piscelinas, 26, unemployed of Tierney Road, London, was jailed for 34 months for the rifle offence and five months for ABH.

Both pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court on November 21.

Detective constable Simon Goulding said: "This was a very violent, unprovoked and unnecessary attack on the victim, who suffered a terrible ordeal in the middle of the night.

"The men were very lucky their injuries were not more serious. However their lives have been completely changed by the impact this attack has had on them. They have suffered terribly from anxiety following on from what happened.

"I hope the sentences and the assurance the men will be deported following their time in prison will allow the men to be able to continue with their lives. This was an isolated attack in a nice area of Crawley and I'd reassure the public these men are now behind bars."
