Jimmy Case hit the nail on the head with his observation that Brighton and Hove Albion are too nice for their own good (Argus, November 11) when the club is preoccupied with toeing the line of the Fair Play scheme in case they are sanctioned when the opposing teams are ignoring it and getting away with it beggars belief.

So what if they attract a financial penalty if it means Premier League football and all the financial benefits that go with it, or Championship survival – it is a price worth paying.

The players need to take responsibility for their attitude and commitment in the battle for survival and fight for every ball even if it means bending the rules a bit.

Where are the players of the Albion’s past today like Andy Rowling, Brian Horton, Bobby Smith, Glen Wilson, Jimmy Case, Des Tennant, Jimmy Langley to name but a few?

These were the type of players who gave 101% commitment in every game win or lose and gave performances that should inspire any player today who wants to wear an Albion shirt.

Where the Albion is today has been hard won by visionaries such as Dick Night and Tony Bloom and the amazing supporters who have stuck by the club through good and bad times and we don’t want to lose it.

Every player who aspires to play for the Albion should be made to read two books that so succinctly record the club’s long and hard battle to survive: We want Falmer and Mad Man.

Then they would appreciate what a privilege it is to play for a club like Brighton and Hove Albion.

Everyone has a part to play in the club’s future – the board of directors, players and supporters alike – and being nice alone won’t guarantee it. Failure is failing to try.
