A MAN is to appear in court for a bail hearing after being accused of swallowing a £9,000 diamond ring in a jewellery shop.

Rayhanur Choudhury, 22, of Bridge Street, Newhaven, remains in custody.

Police still do not know if a chunky 18-carat white gold ring fully set with emerald-cut diamonds is likely to pass through his system.

On Sunday, November 16, at about 3pm two men entered Exclusive Jewellery in Union Street, Brighton, and tried on rings before a member of staff was distracted. One ring is believed to have been swapped for a cheap one.

CCTV appears to show a man putting his hand to his mouth before swallowing.

A police spokeswoman said: “The process is to wait for the ring to pass through their system.  An X-Ray did not reveal the ring and the prison has been made aware.”

Mr Choudhury was charged with the theft of the ring, perfume from Boots and possession of cannabis.

He is to appear before Lewes Crown Cour t on December 17 with a date for his trial to be fixed.
