FIREFIGHTERS raised thousands of pounds from generous by-passers The Preston Circus station crew and helpers collected for the Firefighters Charity and raised about £2,500 on Wednesday. They will also be collecting today.
Station manager Richard Chamberlain said: “I think people are just generous in general and generous to the firefighters – we still get quite a lot of support. I’d like to thank everyone who has donated. We started collecting here around 40 years ago just because of how close the junction is, and now people have come to expect it. The record we raised was £11,000.”
The Firefighters Charity provides treatment and support to serving and retired firefighters and their families, with rehabilitation centres in Littlehampton, Devon and Cumbria.
It needs about £8million every year to stay up and running and relies entirely on donations.
Mr Chamberlain said: “Stay safe over Christmas – check smoke alarms and take care with candles. If you live in the city or anywhere else in the county you are eligible for a free home safety fire visit from the fire-fighters.”
