THREE ambulances had to wait in traffic after an electrical fault on the Newhaven swing bridge.

Witnesses reported seeing three ambulances with their emergency lights flashing getting caught in the traffic jam waiting for the Newhaven swing bridge near Newhaven port on Thursday night.

The bridge suffered a fault with an electricity cable and became jammed during its 8pm opening.

A witness said: “Drivers were very angry and continued sounding their horns for long periods of time.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said their crews are “well trained” to deal with unexpected delays.

The fault remained at the bridge on Friday as crews worked to resolve the issue.

A spokesman for the East Sussex County Council said: “A fault with an electricity cable meant the swing bridge had to be raised manually. This process took about an hour and we apologise.

“We are working hard to fix the problem, but in the meantime will need to continue to raise the bridge manually. We would like to thank motorists for their patience.”
