ALL these children want for Christmas is a new playground.

The group got together with a Christmas wish list for Santa asking him to provide new play equipment for the Mile Oak Recreation Ground in Portslade.

The children are part of the Mile Oak Rec Action Group (MORAG) who have been campaigning to get the park renovated as they claim it’s been “forgotten”.

Around 80 children attended the event last week where they presented their Christmas list.

They also performed a rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas with the lyrics “we want a new playground”.

Tiffany Soanes, 40, from Graham Avenue, whose children Drew, four, and Evelyn, eight, use the park, said: “We needed to do something to keep the campaign alive and keep pressure on the council to do what they have promised.

“The Mile Oak Primary children wanted to write a letter to Santa asking for new play equipment.

“We are going to be doing a series of fundraising events to help support improvements and get new equipment.”

The campaign is also being assisted by the Mile Oak Primary School.

Martin Cooper, deputy head at the school, said: “Most of our kids use the rec and we are willing to help them. We can see the park needs improving.”

A tabletop sale to help raise funds for the park will be held at the school in the new year.

Peter Kyle, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate who has been campaigning with MORAG, said: “It’s amazing that we see teachers, pupils, parents and residents all coming together over something they care about and which would benefit not just themselves, but future generations.

“We’ve been told by the council that they will prepare a report, which is good and well, but I hope they take notice of the strength of feeling in the area and come to visit the site.”
