Scores of firefighters have spent the night battling a serious house fire in Crowborough.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) was called to Rannoch Road at about 10.10pm last night (Sunday) to reports of a blaze in a residential home.

The initial ground floor fire spread to the property's roof. Up to eight engines have been at the scene since the initial call out.

As of this 7am this morning (Monday) three engines are still at the scene.

The elderly homeowner and her husband, in their 70s, were treated for smoke inhalation. The woman was given oxygen at the scene while the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesman from ESFRS said: “Eight crews were sent at 9.52pm. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze with two hose reel jets, two main jets and foam.

“Relief officers and crews were sent to the incident at 3am and 5am respectively.

“The incident has now been scaled down to three pumps but is still on-going and fire investigators are currently at the scene.”
