Heavy rain this morning has brought flooding to roads, railways and homes across Sussex.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) has been called to several homes where water has affected electrics leading to a threat to life.

Firefighters were called to a Sainsbury's store in Hove, reportedly next to the A293 Hangleton link road just after 9am, where water is thought to have caused damage to be fixed later today.

Across Brighton and Hove, the council's flooding engineers were out checking the area.

Firefighters pumped water out of a house in New Road near Lewes at about 9.45am and also attended incidents where water affected electrics in Cooksbridge and Hailsham.

A crew was also called to Hailsham Road in Herstmonceux after reports of someone trapped in their car.

When it arrived, however, the person had escaped.

Firefighters said water was "knee-deep" near the Honda dealership in the road.

ESFRS has said that during extreme weather it prioritises calls where lives may be at risk.

Elsewhere on the roads, the A29 in Bognor was blocked due to flooding between Orchard Way, Highfield Road and Rowan Way between Tesco and Sainsbury's.

A mini roundabout in Dittons Road, Stone Cross, by Tesco Express, was affected, with police urging drivers to take care.

The A29 near Bury Hill, near West Burton Lane, and the A2037 Shoreham Road between Nep Town Road in Henfield and New Hall Lane in Small Dole were also flooded.

The A271 in Herstmonceux was closed and there were reports of flooding at the A27 Selmeston Junction.

In Brighton and Hove, Winfield Avenue and Carden Avenue were subjected to surface flooding with Western Road in the city centre also affected.

A railway line near Plumpton was also affected. Water poured off of fields near Riddens Lane level crossing and on to the London side of Plumpton Station, leading to flash flooding.

The London-bound line was submerged but the coast-bound line, while flooded, was not affected to the same degree. Northbound trains were cancelled while the water receded.

The flooding washed debris and ballast on to the track.

It was reported just before 10am and the line reopened at 11.10am, with knock-on delays expected.
