The fact Juliet McCaffery was removed from her position on the children, families and schools committee seems entirely reasonable as she ignored the findings of the working party and was swayed by a small part of her ward. As a result, she seemed unable to take the broader view for the city as a whole.
While I understand the disappointment of those opposing the changes, I feel this decision enables a better degree of social inclusion.
The new system will enable children from some of the most disadvantaged parts of the city to remain together as they enter secondary school. This is known to improve the transition from primary education and hence improves these children's ability to learn.
The new secondary admissions system is a fairer deal for the city.
