John Jolliffe (Letters, Janaury 23) maintains George Cooper would have supported stock transfer of council housing. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Cooper was a colleague of mine on Brighton Trades Council for many years. We organised May Day festivals on the seafront and he was a lifelong socialist.

I can say with absolute certainty he would have opposed what he would have termed the privatisation of council housing in Brighton and Hove.

If he was around today, he would have been knocking on doors at every opportunity to gain a "no"

vote. He would have been crystal clear that transfer was not in the interests of the tenants.

What would amuse him, as he spins around in his grave, is that years after he died, he is still managing to cause political controversy.
