Heavy snow is expected today as temperatures plummet to -6C in Sussex.

Areas in the south are expected to see up to two inches of snow by Thursday morning's rush hour.

Hilly areas across the country are expected to get the heaviest snowfall.

Temperatures are predicted to fall to -3C in Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing, and -6C at Gatwick and Haywards Heath.

The coldest point in Britain on Tuesday night was in Powys in Wales, where temperatures fell to -9C.

In the .case of bad weather, the Highways Agency is warning drivers to listen to travel bulletins while on the road, and not to travel unless a journey is essential.

People are also being advised to make sure they are prepared, with warm clothes, food, water, boots, de-icer, a torch and spade, particularly for long journeys.

Cancellations and long delays plagued Southern Railway customers when snow hit the county two weeks ago.

West Sussex County Council, East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council have gritters on standby again to clear A-roads and main B-roads.

Access roads to hospitals, schools and colleges, industrial estates, rail and bus stations and ambulance and fire stations are all also routinely gritted if freezing conditions are expected.

In January 22 schools were closed after 15cm of snow fell.

Parents are advised to listen to local radio stations for the latest information about school closures.

Pensioners and people on low incomes are being urged to dress warmly, eat well and heat their homes properly to avoid suffering because of cold conditions. More than 20,000 people die each winter in Britain from illnesses caused by cold.
