KIND-HEARTED pedestrians will be able to make a donation at a charity shop anytime day or night as part of a world-first trial.

Brighton and Hove will have one of the first shops ever to have a high-tech tap and donate window allowing passers-by to donate money to Cancer Research UK 24 hours a day.

The innovative contactless technology will allow residents to donate £2 to Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research work by tapping their contactless debit or credit card on the window even if the shop is closed.

The technology has been dubbed the beginning of the end for chuggers or charity muggers who are regularly found in high streets asking passers-by for charitable donations.

A donation will trigger a short film showing the charity’s scientists at work in their lab, bringing to life exactly where their money goes. The contactless giving-technology is being trialled in four stores across the UK, including the charity’s store in Western Road in Brighton, from next Friday until February 13.

The initiative is timed to coincide with World Cancer Day on February 4.

Charity bosses say that Brighton was chosen in part because the shop was given the capability when it was fitted out in time for its opening in September.

Alongside contactless giving, the charity is also asking people to unite on World Cancer Day by buying a Unity Band, available from Cancer Research UK shops, for a suggested donation of £2.

Alternatively people can text Unite to 70200 to make a donation of £3.
