A councillor will face a standards hearing tomorrow following allegations he was rude, aggressive and swore at his colleagues.

Councillor Anthony White, of Seaford Town Council, is expected before the local authority’s audit and standards sub-committee in relation to allegations dating back to December 9, 2013, when he was the town mayor.

Committee papers state he was “rude and aggressive” towards former council leader Ian White.

He is then said to have “shouted and swore” at then town clerk Sam Shippen before “pursuing her out of the offices verbally abusing her”.

He then “used foul and abusive language” when speaking to another councillor, Linda Wallraven, in her shop, it is alleged.

Councillor White has issued a written apology to those mentioned but is now required to attend tomorrow’s meeting to determine whether he breached the council’s code of conduct.

However, the independent councillor told The Argus he would not attend, branding the hearing “a petty waste of time and money”.

Apology He said: “I’m not going. I’ve apologised and I have moved on.

“As far as I’m concerned it’s all over.

“This investigation has wasted more public money and I am not going to be part of it.”

On being asked about his behaviour he added: “Do I apologise for my language and my behaviour on that day? Yes I do. I fell short of my own standards but I don’t apologise for sticking up for what I believe is right and sticking up for the people of Seaford.”

If the panel finds Coun White has breached the authority’s code of conduct, it can issue punishments ranging from a formal letter to removing him from committees and appointments.

The panel does not have the power to suspend him.

The hearing is the latest in a series of incidents to rock the council in recent months.

Last year, Norman Baker, MP for Lewes, called for the local authority to be investigated after claims of out-of-control spending and secrecy.
