Green councillor and parliamentary candidate Christopher Hawtree indulges in some petty sniping against the Labour Party’s plan for local businesses in We already Do It (Argus Letters, February 2).

He appears blissfully unaware, however, of his local party’s decision to mandate their councillors to set an illegal budget.

This stance is reminiscent of Derek Hatton and the Militant Tendency in Liverpool in the 80s.

That ultimately ended up with Liverpool Council sending redundancy notices to council staff in taxis.

The Green Party is suggesting that the city council just walk away from the setting of a balanced budget, which would then mean the government stepping in and imposing one on the city.

We need to get the basics right with local services such as refuse and recycling and we need our young people trained through proper apprenticeships to name but two issues that really matter to local people.
