The mystery of a horse that was seen galloping down Lewes high street has been solved.

The Argus reported earlier this week how shocked locals saw what looked to be a racehorse galloping without a rider in the middle of the road on Sunday.

We can now confirm the horse – called Highsalvia Cosmos - is in training with Lewes-based handler Mark Hoad.

Despite running loose on Sunday and galloping on hard concrete, the four-year-old won its race at Kempton on Tuesday.

A staff member at Mark’s yard said: “I said to Mark, if he goes and wins at Kempton after Sunday then it will be a miracle.

“But he did really well and won by two lengths.

“What happened was that another horse bolted in the yard and ran off towards our gallops, and while we went to grab him Highsalvia then made a run for it too.

“He’s a bit of a monkey. We all refuse to take him out for grass because he always gets loose. Normally when that happens they always come back to the yard but this time he managed to escape.”

Partnered by jockey William Carson, Highsalvia Cosmos’ 7/2 win at Kempton on Wednesday was his first in five attempts in the UK.
