A LITTLE green pig has helped children to learn more about maths while improving creative writing.

Year 4 pupils at St Martin’s CE Primary School took part in a project – co-organised by charity Little Green Pig, Brighton and Hove library service and not-for-profit group Culture Shift – to research and write their own tale.

Miss Joshi, Year 4 teacher at the school in Hartington Road, Brighton, wanted her pupils to hone their maths skills so the tale had to involve numerical elements. The pupils attended three sessions at Jubilee Library to come up with an idea.

The children created a story entitled Jimbo The Time-Travelling Duck, with each pupil writing their own ending.

Little Green Pig, which hopes to open a creative writing centre for seven to 18-year-olds in the London Road area, published each child’s story, with drawings by a professional illustrator.

Brighton and Hove Mayor Brian Fitch and his wife Nora visited St Martin’s on Tuesday to celebrate the pupils’ efforts with a tea party.

Cindy Cox, director of Culture Shift, said: “The project needed to focus on maths so we helped to organise a timeline and library trail during the children’s visits to Jubilee Library.

“The project was not just about organisations helping with the arts but with how arts and creativity can help with learning in general.”
