It will take a few crisp notes to prise this unusual-looking snack away from its proud owner after it was put up for auction on eBay.

A Brighton resident is selling a crisp with a ‘Nike logo’ in the middle in aid of a hospice.

Rob Thompson decided to sell the paprika-flavoured Lidl Crusti Croc crisp after his housemates were unconvinced about its similarity to the sports company’s logo.

The auction has already attracted nine bids in its first day online, with the current leading offer of £7.50 putting the bidder in line to own what the 23-year-old seller describes as “a piece of savoury treat history”.

Brighton office worker Mr Thompson said: “I just like eating Pringle-type crisps. I usually have a couple of packets a day. I eat them in stacks of three but for some reason I pulled this one out individually and instantly saw the tick and thought ‘how amazing’.

“I kept it and showed it to my housemates but they were not convinced so I put it on eBay to prove them wrong. I have been surprised by the interest. I’m already up to £7.50.

“I will have to post it very carefully or maybe deliver it to the winning bidder by bicycle.”

Mr Thompson will give the money to St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley in thanks for the support his family received during his mother’s time there.

He said: “I can’t be seen to make money from this crisp. I’ve sold a couple of items on eBay before but nothing out of the ordinary. I’m a crisp seller virgin.”

Matthew Cornish, fundraising manager at St Catherine’s, said: “We are grateful to our supporters for raising money in fun and unusual ways.”

A Lidl spokeswoman said: “We are always thrilled to see people coming up with fun and innovative ways of raising money for worthy local causes.”
