Imagine being told you should not be here and then being sent away to be detained.
This harrowing experience would shake anybody but it is reality for detainees who reside at the UK’s immigration detention centres.
While illegal immigration cannot be accepted these men should still be allowed to feel safe.
A prison-like environment coupled with confusion and lack of understanding as to why they are being detained creates a culture of hopelessness.
Mental health issues are something which must be carefully managed to help support these people in their time of need.
With a government inquiry into the policies and processes surrounding immigration centres hopefully incidents like the recent events at Brook House can be avoided.
