I read a letter about asbestos and I would like to say my husband was also a joiner and he came home with his apron pockets filled with the dust from asbestos which I would empty before washing.

I am the lucky one. It did not affect me, but he became very ill.

He had a lung removed but the results were not good and he was told it had travelled to another part of his chest which showed up months later. He died aged 53, a terrible death.

I tried to claim compensation but was told it was not serious. He died in 1972 and legalisation did not arrive until 1973.

I am now 86 and the years have not been forgiving.

I see workmen in old shops and they have no mask and the dust is profuse. When will they wake up to this menace?
