WHEN you are in a position of power – especially when that position involves children – you have to be so careful when it comes to social media.

It is seen by many as a place where you can pour your heart out and you would like to think only the people you know will ever read it, but this is not always the case.

So when a chair of governors used sexual language on what is essentially a public forum – it was always going to cause a stir.

You could argue that teachers, governors and anyone else who works in schools should not have to be politically correct and robotic outside of the school gates.

If anything, more so than the rest of us, given they spend most days with youngsters. But it should probably be done behind closed doors.

There are few closed doors in the world of social media, and tech-savvy students will find their way into teachers’ and governors’ profiles.

Ms Atkins, who is supposed to be overseeing the school, should probably know better than to leave her Facebook page wide open for all to see.
