A TRANSPORT minister’s call for train passengers to get properly compensated when their journeys are delayed is welcome.

Yes, MPs are taking a stand. But all this noise should have happened months, if not years ago.

Thanks to exclusive stories published by The Argus, rail companies are now being held to account and tough questions are being asked.

Trains should not be so late that passengers need to ask for compensation.

But if they are, then the 30-minute threshold for compensation should be lowered, especially given the cost of rail tickets.

A 15 or 20-minute delay may not sound like much but it can cause havoc for customers, especially if they have other trains to catch.

The current Delay Repay scheme is clearly not fit for purpose.

That has to change – and fast.
