NEW village development plans have caused concerns over road safety.

Wivelsfield Parish Council is looking for views on its neighbourhood plan, which has gone out for consultation.

As part of the plan, the council wants to focus on developing land, particularly in Slugwash Lane.

But residents say the development threatens road safety.

Alan Janes, 84, of Slugwash Lane, said the council battled East Sussex County Council for years to introduce traffic-calming measures such as wider footpaths and 20mph limits.

He said: “The whole of Slugwash Lane is concerned about it. There is concern in the village about building beyond the boundaries. It sets a precedent.

“Pedestrian safety should be high up on the criteria of any development.”

A spokeswoman for the parish council said: “Public safety in the parish has always been important to the council.

“To that end it has worked tirelessly over recent years to achieve a lower speed limit throughout the village.

“The council welcomes all comments relating to the proposed Neighbourhood Plan during the consultation.”
