ONE of Brighton’s main traffic routes will be turned into a water slide for one not-to-be-missed fundraising day.

Residents are being given a unique chance to go belly up along a 100m water slide in Edward Street, Brighton, when the RNLI’s Slipway Slide visits the city next month.

360 lucky competition winners will get the chance to have a go in front of their friends and families on the 100m long water slide which will take over the road on March 21.

The slide has been created especially for the RNLI and will also be rolled out at events in Plymouth and Bradford later this year.

Lucky winners, who will be drawn from a text ballot, will be asked to wear clothing that covers their arms and legs and must “be prepared to get wet”.

Event organisers will supply lilos to help participants reach top speed – with no risk of a ticket.

It is hoped the event will attract a similar level of interest as an art exhibition in Bristol last May which saw 100,000 people compete for the limited 360 places and thousands more watching on.

Tim Robertson, RNLI innovation project manager, said: ‘Slipway Slide is a really unique spectacle for Brighton as riders get the chance to slide down one of the town’s busiest streets.

“RNLI lifeboat crew members are on-call 24/7.

“Most have a full-time day job, but they carry a pager and, when it goes off, they rush to the lifeboat station and launch the lifeboat – often down a slipway – to rescue those in danger.

“All profits from the event will go to saving lives at sea.

“This means crew members have the right kit to keep them safe and dry, and vital training to ensure they bring everyone home safely.”

The slide will be in action from 11am until 4pm on Saturday March 21 in Edward Street the road closed throughout the event. Anyone interested to be in with a chance of sliding should text SLIDE with their first name and last name to 82727 with texts costing £1.50.

Entrants must be aged 18 or over to enter.
