Thieves have been targeting expensive hand and power tools in a number of thefts from works vans and sites across Brighton and Hove.

Inspector Nicholas Dias is warning tradesmen, contractors and site managers to ensure that all tools are removed from vehicles and locked safely and securely away at night and other times when they are unattended.

He said: "Tool thefts have a huge impact on local traders and Hove police have been responding with crime prevention visits to local sites and increased patrols in hot-spot areas.

"Officers and staff from across the division are working closely together to target the offenders and to pursue those who handle and sell stolen goods.

"We strongly advise that all tools are removed from vehicles overnight. If items are being stored on site, ensure that it is left secure and any tools are locked away out of sight or ideally removed from the location. Contractors are also advised to consider CCTV, alarming their storage facilities and on-site security.

"The public also has a key part to play in ensuring that Brighton and Hove is a 'no go' area for thieves committing these crimes and we would always encourage people to phone us if they see anything suspicious and to ensure that their own vehicles and properties are fully secured.

"If you suspect a theft is taking place call 999; otherwise email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 to report your suspicions. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
