CAMPAIGNERS are petitioning to stop the council from cutting hot meals at a day centre which they say is an “attack on their dignity”.

Service users at Tower House Day Centre in Brighton are campaigning against proposals by Brighton and Hove City Council to stop offering subsidised cooked lunches from April.

Jean Higginson, 56, who set up the petition, is asking for more people to come forward and support them.

Ms Higginson, from Hove, is a qualified nurse but was left disabled after a brain haemorrhage in 2002.

She said: “What really upsets is me I have seen grown men crying in the centre – the cuts are an attack on our dignity.

“Some feel as they are being treated like they are not even worth a hot meal and many already have low self-esteem.”

She added council savings may be lost as service users have to further rely on carers and warned of the potential nutritional impacts losing the hot meals may have.
