A CITY-centre building may still need to be completely demolished after emergency work was carried out to make it safe.

On Wednesday, parts of a building in Over Street, Brighton, collapsed and neighbours were evacuated.

All but two groups of residents are now back in their homes, but the safety of the building continues to be assessed and it could potentially be completely demolished.

A council spokesman said: “Demolition of the dangerous sections of the Over Street property has been undertaken and completed.

“A further review will be undertaken to establish whether the whole building will need to be demolished upon completion of further stabilisation works.

“Two groups of residents are currently unable to return to their properties.

“This situation will be reviewed upon completion of the stabilisation works.”

Firefighters were called to the three-storey residential property and commander Richard Chamberlain warned “it will come down if we do not do anything about it”.

Parts of the wall were destroyed to make the building safe.

There were no reported injuries and the property was empty at the time.
