Southern Rail are a complete joke. Having driven trains for Southern for six years I know too well how the internals work, or better said, don’t work.
A constant finger pointing and wrangling with Network Rail is the main problem.
They spend more time pushing fines back and forth than looking at solutions.
The train schedules are ridiculously tight and they see drivers running from train to train to make connections.
The slightest hiccup, and I mean the slightest, has a huge knock-on effect and voilà, you have delayed trains.
Instead of loosening the schedule by even a few minutes they then trip over themselves to point the finger at staff and drivers.
It will never change. Privatisation equals pressure to perform at silly levels and it’s just not sustainable.
