A FORMER nurse has won a national award for her ice cream van.

Katy Alston, known to her customers as Mrs Whippy, was voted the country’s top mobile ice cream seller by the Ice Cream Alliance, the trade body for the industry.

Katy was given her Pinks Vintage Ice Cream van for Christmas by her husband Kevin, after she worked as a nurse for 14 years.

She said: “When I left I didn’t know what to do next, but Kevin suggested I should start an ice cream business.

“He said I would be in control of my own life and bought me an old van for Christmas, which we did up.”

Katy explained that pink was her favourite colour, which gave birth to the name and her colourful van is now a familiar sight around Bognor and Chichester, and at weddings and other events across West Sussex.

Katy added: “Having been a nurse I found the health and safety side easy, but I found it more difficult to become a businesswoman.”

Katy sells ice cream made by New Forest Ice Cream from Hampshire and also uses a tricycle.
