A woman who was seriously injured when a lorry transporting a mobile home crashed on to her car is now showing signs of recovery.

The 32-year-old was driving a white Nissan Juke when her vehicle collided with an articulated lorry transporting a mobile home near Chichester yesterday afternoon.

The crash caused significant traffic delays on the A27 eastbound.

Roads feeding into the Fishbourne roundabout also suffered delays and congestion while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The woman from Waterlooville, Hampshire, she was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance.

The lorry driver, a 55-year-old man from Hull in Yorkshire, suffered shock. He was driving one of two vehicles transporting mobile homes.

The crash occurred shortly after 1pm and police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or who noticed either vehicle being driven shortly beforehand, to contact them.

Sergeant Tony Crisp, of the Arundel Road Policing Unit, said: "I understand the woman who was seriously injured is now making a recovery. The incident caused huge tailbacks in the area, with eastbound traffic queued for several miles back to the Sussex-Hampshire border.

"Unfortunately, with a huge lorry and its load to recover, the scene to be examined and cleared, and the need to bring in the air ambulance helicopter, we were unable to reopen the carriageway for a good five hours.

"I would like to thank motorists who were caught up in the jam for their patience and understanding ."
