Plans to build an incinerator in a town were approved by councillors today.

The 14,000 metre-square energy from waste facility at North Quay, Newhaven, is capable of dealing with 210,000 tonnes of household waste per year.

Despite 16,275 objections and ten years of campaigning, local protesters said their objections had been ignored.

East Sussex County Council gave the go-ahead for the scheme at a meeting at County Hall in Lewes.

Representatives from campaign groups and local councillors have vowed the fight is not over.

They are planning to write to the Government in a bid to have the decision called in.
